Barrister Enoch takes on Upper West Media practitioners, describing them as cheap
The morning show host of Tumpaani FM, Mr. Enoch Danwaah, popularly known as Barrister Enoch, has described Upper West media practitioners as cheap journalists.
The all time brave morning show host of the Nadowli based radio station in the Upper West Region of Ghana has on March 25, 2022 heavily criticized the media practitioners of the Upper West Region for being very cheap in their practice and being given little amount of pay for rendering services at programmes.
During the newspaper review segment, Barrister Enoch indicated that some journalists are payed GHÇ 100.00 or less when they are invited to cover programmes. According to him, there are instances where journalists look up to politicians for minor assistances and this affects the objectivity of their analysis of issues.
He further criticized both state owned and private media stations CEOs for failing to invest in capacity building of journalists operating within the Upper West Region as well as significant remuneration. These CEOs are interested in their returns and not the welfare of the journalists working in their media stations.
Citing the likes of Mr. Anaaka Waris(Chairman General) and Mr. Idel Fuseini(Aspirila) both at Home Radio in Wa, as well as Mr. Morris Banaanwine(Radio Progress, Wa), he praised them on their level of professionalism in their practice and charged them to do more.
Indeed, capacity building training and furthering of education need to be taken seriously by journalists. This helps to upgrade their knowledge and broaden their horizon for quality reportage and general practice.
Barrister Enoch is appalled by the seeming low interest of upper west journalists in developmental concerns within the region. Most of the time, their attention is on national stories of political nature. In the August 2021 flood disaster that washed away some major roads in the Upper West Region, others similarly criticized media practitioners in the Upper West Region of paying little attention to this critical matter and similar concerns affecting the lives of the inhabitants. It is the media practitioners who can help to champion developmental concerns in their vicinity for the whole world to hear and probably come to aid.
In a similar vein, the Upper West Regional minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has sometime ago criticized journalists in the region of focusing so much on politicians to the detriment of developmental issues in the region. He admonished journalists to consider redirecting their attention to developmental concerns and challenges affecting the lives of the people in the Upper West Region.
In conclusion, it is imperative for media practitioners to have periodic capacity building training programmes in order to be abreast of new developments in the world journalism industry. It is equally vital for same journalists in question to use their media platforms to effect position change and advance developmental concerns of the people of Upper West Region.
