"Article 71 should be scrapped"- B T Sly
The Communication Officer for NDC in the Nadowli Kaleo Constituency has called for a total overhaul of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
He made these comments in a social media post in the wake of the recent brouhaha about the payment of salaries and allowances to spouses of the president of Ghana and that of the Vice President.
He described such move as "unfair" to the ordinary Ghanaian in the light of current circumstances.
Below is the full statement he posted.
B.T.SLY writes!
The Professor Ntiamoa Baidu's Emoluments Committee report is a rip off. The committee has done great disservice and injustice to the Ghanaian taxpayer especially the Ghanaian poor worker as the recommendations contained in the Committee's report are ridiculously unthinkable.
In light of the present circumstances in which the President, through the 7th Parliament of the Republic, approved these terrible recommendations to increase the emoluments of article 71 office holders with arrears and even pay huge salaries to first and second ladies of Ghana who aren't office holders without recourse to the concomitant effect on the public purse, there should not be a reason to delay the amendment of the 1992 Constitution.
The 1992 Constitution has served its purpose and it is high time certain aspects of it are amended to reflect the aspirations and welfare of ALL Ghanaians rather than a select few.
In doing so;
1. Article 71 should be scrapped completely.
2. All public Officers must be put on the same salary scheme ie.ssss
3. immunity granted a President or ex-presidents should be scrapped
4. President MUST pay taxes
5. No MP should be made a minister. If you want to be a legislator, so be it. This is to give true meaning to separation of powers. MPs should be paid more than CEOs of state institutions.
6. Finally, presidential election should be won by number of regions and not by majority votes.
If this 1992 Constitution remains as it is now, one day, ministers wives will be paid salaries and Ghana will progress poorer as it is progressing now.
How can we live in a country where those who do less earns more and those who work all their organs out are made poorer because of poor remunerations? Very unfair!
