First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo Addo to refund allowances paid to her
The First Lady of the republic of Ghana has come out with a statement on the 12th of July 2021 to refund all monies that have been paid to her as allowances from the date of the president's assumption of office.
The letter which is written by the Director of Communication from the office of the First Lady, Kokor Bleboo on her behalf came out after there was a stair among citizens of Ghana following Parliament's approval of a recommendation by the Ntiamoa-Baidu's Committee to regularize the payment of allowances to spouses of the current president and his vice.
According to the letter, the payment of allowances to spouses of president and their vices has been in existence since the 4th Republic till it reached her turn. That she did not request to be paid allowances, she only receives that which has been in existence for a while now.
She expressed dissatisfaction in her statement concerning the discussions of the public with regards to the matter of they being paid allowances because concerns raised by the public comes with negative opinions trying to tarnish her image as a good woman and so in view of that, she (First Lady) has decided, in consultance with the president to refund the monies amounting to GH¢ 899,097.84 paid to her as allowance.
The statement also states that, she has decided not to accept any monies that have been allocated to be paid to her with regards to the recommendation by the Ntiamoa-Baidu's Committee, because she does not want the issue to be a distraction to the good works the president is doing for the nation. And that she will continue to support the president in executing his duties as president.
