Age is just a number, leadership is a skill - meet the young but vibrant Assembly member of our time.

Many scholars have come up with numerous definitions of leadership. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines leadership as the capacity to lead whilst the U.S Air force defines leadership as "the art of influencing and directing people in such a way that will win their obedience, confidence, respect and loyal co-operation in achieving common objectives". What this means is that, a leader needs to mentor and coach others in a way that commands respect and confidence in the vision you put forth.

Who is this vibrant and visionary leader of our time that we will love to know? He is in the person of Honourable Nestor Mwinterebo who is 26 years of age and currently the Assembly member for Goriyiri electoral area of the Nadowli-Kaleo District in the Upper West region of Ghana. Hon. Nestor Mwinterebo contested the December 2019 Assembly elections and because of his competence and high sense of leadership skills among other numerous qualities, he was unopposed in the Assembly membership portfolio though they were some controversies. However,  Ellen Johnson Sirleaf once said that "leadership is never given on a silver platter, one has to earn it" and that was what transpired.

He has the experience of leadership right from nursery school education to his tertiary level. Permit me at this gesture to highlight some of these leadership experiences. He was the assistant senior prefect during his junior high school education, Vice Student's Representative Council (SRC) president at Queen of Peace senior high school, President of Catholic community of Jahan College of Education, he is currently the first Deputy Majority Leader of the Nadowli-Kaleo Youth Parliament and also the Assembly member for Goriyiri electoral area. These are but a few of his leadership experiences.

He believes in empowering the youth in their social, economic, political and public lives just as his slogan goes "give the youth the chance and mentor them up". Hon. Nestor is a role model and inspiration to many youth because of his charisma. He believes in community engagement rather than authoritative leadership because he engages his community members in decision making. Haile Selassie once said, a man who says "I have learned enough I will learn no further" should be considered as knowing nothing at all. The said assembly member is a leader who taps wisdom from elders which therefore smoothies his administration as an Assembly member for the Goriyiri electoral area. Because of this, other people call him "the humble servant".

Talking about his achievements since he took over office as the assembly member that distinct him from other assembly members, are as follows. The renovation of the 67 year old then ramshackle Goriyiri R/C primary school in his electoral area, unprecedented, his championing of the resolving of the havoc caused by a torrential rainfall in the Upper West region with which his electoral area was the most affected in the whole of the region. He made sure that the homeless had homes to lay their heads. It did not just end there, he wrote to numerous NGOs to help the victims of the flood in his electoral area. He also ensured empowerment of women in his electoral area by calling on NGOs to help train women and girls in trading and hand work activities. Promoting unity through culture is one of his hall marks which cannot be left out in spelling out his achievements.

On education, he secured desks for schools in his electoral area through the District assembly. He also helped three girls in his electoral area who were at the point of dropping out of school because of some issues to continue their education. These are but a few enactments of the young assembly member.

Kofi Annan of our own said that "any society that does not succeed in tapping into the energy and creativity of its youth will be left behind" I therefore entreat the youth to take up leadership responsibilities in our various communities for leadership is not about age, because age is just a number whilst leadership is a skill. All of us can also be like this young assembly member, Hon. Nestor Mwinterebo. Be courageous to take responsibilities, for Nelson Mandela ever said that "I learnt that, courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear"

Thank you.
