Hon. Dr. Sebastian Sandaare Bemoans the Deplorable State of Some Roads in his Constituency

The member of parliament for Daffiama Bussie Issa (DBI), Hon. Dr. Sebastian M. Sandaare has on Tuesday October 10, 2023, during a visit to his Constituency, expressed his displeasure over the deplorable nature of some major linking roads in the DBI Constituency.

A road which linked DBI District and Jirapa Municipal was washed off by a torrential rainfall in 2021 therefore cutting off people in DBI from accessing some parts of the constituency as well as Jirapa Municipal and the vice versa. This situation has remained same till this year 2023 hence, posing threat to the people of both Constituencies.

Speaking to the media during the visit to the washed away road, the member of parliament enumerated the negative implications of the phenomenon saying that, the situation has deprived some people of his constituency from accessing health care from Daffiama where the only health center in the whole constituency is located, causing difficulty in transporting farm produce as well as making access to education by school children in the constituency difficult. He also bemoaned how the deplorable road claimed lives of some people in his constituency.

Hon. Sandaare added that, in taking measures to address the situation, he posed an urgent question in parliament to the minister of roads and highways, Hon. Kwasi Amoako-Atta about the steps the ministry has taken to solve the situation. However, the minister promised to work on the road in two weeks time "but these two weeks have turned into two years with no work done on the said road" he added.

However, the road which links DBI District and Jirapa Municipal has the part belonging to Jirapa Municipal being awarded to a contractor as part of the EU road projects currently ongoing in the Upper West Region. This therefore triggers the Law maker to demand answers as to why one road will have half of its part belonging to Jirapa Municipal under contract whilst the other part belonging to DBI is neglected in its deplorable state. "I want the minister of roads and highways to give me answers to that effect" he demanded.

He finally urged government to consider including the remaining part of the road to the ongoing EU projects so as to link the two constituencies, thus, DBI and Jirapa Constituencies together respectively to improve access to quality education, health care delivery, improve in trade, among others.

On the sideline, some members of the Dakyie community, a suburb of Daffiama which has been cut off from Daffiama by the rain, expressed their ordeal saying, that, the situation makes their children not to be able to access education since they attend schools in Daffiama. They added that, it poses threat to livelihood of these school going children and the entire community at large. They therefore called on government and other stakeholders to come to their aid and fix the washed away road so that they can continue their day-to-day activities without fear and with ease.

In addition, Naa Yeldidong Kunliepuori Songninge I, a divisional chief of the Daffiama paramountcy recounted how the Daffiama-Saawie-Gbare road served as a sub saharan road that linked Burkina Faso with other parts of Ghana some centuries back. This therefore makes it a significant commercial road hence, the need for government to work on it.
