NADOWLI-KALEO DISTRICT: STALEMATE IN ELECTING THE NEW PRESIDING MEMBER

On Monday 12th February, 2024 The Nadowli-Keleo District Assembly found itself at a standstill as the election to choose a new Presiding Member failed to yield a conclusive outcome. The two contestants, Hon. Braimah Yakubu Assembly member for Nadowli East and Hon. Ngminnie Asinye Noah a Government Appointee, both fell short of the required two-thirds majority needed to secure the position, leaving the assembly in a state of limbo.

With 36 Assembly members and 16 Government Appointees making up the voting body, the election was keenly contested between the two candidates. In the initial round, out of the 52 total delegates, Hon. Braimah garnered 27 votes while Hon. Noah secured 22 votes, with 3 spoiled ballots marring an otherwise intense race.

## The Second Round Dilemma

As the session progressed into a second round, tensions ran high as both candidates sought to sway the remaining voters in their favor. Hon. Braimah managed to secure an additional vote, bringing his total to 28, while Hon. Noah saw a modest increase of two votes, reaching 24, with zero spoiled ballots this time around.

Despite the efforts of both candidates and the closely divided support within the assembly, the Electoral Commissioner was forced to adjourn the proceedings to reconvene in 10 days' time. The deadlock in electing a new Presiding Member underscores the challenges of achieving consensus in a closely contested election, where the margin of victory hangs on a delicate balance of support.

The inconclusive election highlights the importance of transparent and fair electoral processes in democratic decision-making. As the Nadowli-Keleo District grapples with the task of selecting a new Presiding Member, the need for constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and a commitment to the democratic principles of the assembly come to the forefront.

As the assembly prepares to reconvene for another round of voting, all eyes are on the candidates, Hon. Braimah Yakubu and Hon. Ngminnie Asinye Noah, as they seek to garner the necessary support to tip the balance in their favor. The coming days will be crucial in determining the future leadership of the district and the unity of the assembly in moving forward.

In the spirit of democratic engagement and institutional integrity, the Nadowli-Keleo District remains poised to navigate this electoral impasse with a commitment to upholding the principles of fair representation and effective governance.
