THE ARROGANCE AND IMPUNITY OF POWER - THE PARLIAMENTARY REJECTION OF THE 2022 BUDGET STATEMENT AND POLICY: BY MARTIN A. B. K. AMIDU

Image
The Parliamentary vote on 26th November 2021 against the approval of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 2022 Budget Statement and Policy presented to the Parliament of Ghana on 17th November 2021 on his behalf by his Co-President and Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was self-inflicted. The Parliamentary vote of rejection of the 2022 budget demonstrates what the arrogance of power and impunity can do to any Government that takes the electorate for granted as rabbles.    Nana Akufo-Addo’s government became infested with the arrogance and impunity of power right from the day it assumed the reins of Government on 7th January 2017. This is the government of a make-believe democrat who consults stakeholders affected by his major policies only after getting Parliament to enact his wishes as policy. The government then seeks cosmetic post facto consultation with affected stakeholders only when there is serious objection to the policy by the electorate and other stakeh...

Why the rejection of the 2022 budget: lack of consultation, policy inconsistencies and arrogance were key - Prof. John Gatsi

Image
The big news in Ghana is the rejection of the 2022 budget and its associated economic policies. We are not accustomed to the  rejection of a national budgets. In western democracies, budgets are sometimes rejected and in some cases budgets have been approved just hours to the deadline. Normally, when national budgets are rejected, the business of government comes to a halt such that nothing could be done. Especially, public sector workers could not be paid because there is no appropriation. We still have over a month to revisit the fiscal and specific economic policies to reflect the sentiments put out in many forms by the public, key stakeholders and  the youth.  A budget rejection only means that the government should reengage the key stakeholders to address  the differences. The good news is that Ghanaians and the minority in parliament eloquently articulated fiscal measures  for which they rejected the budget. So it should not be difficult to revise t...

Avoid blame game about unemployment issues to reduce anger- Prof. John Gatsi

Image
Unemployment, job creation, graduate unemployment among others deserve sincere and objective consideration by political leaders, business leaders , Educational leaders and jobseekers to be able to develop a comprehensive solution in the interest of all. Considering from 2001 just to capture two decades of unemployment and its related discussions in Ghana, no political administration has been “free “ from the reality. One apparent consequence  has been a deep-seated political strategy by political parties to influence voters instead of finding lasting solutions on job creation and unemployment issues. All administrations since 2001 introduced strategies to attempt to deal with what has been described as potential tsunami that will put excessive pressure on governments. All administrations have introduced “youth in this “,  “you in that “ in a way to contain the situation but  these measures have not proven to be potent. When the pressures of unemployment surge, gove...

Dr Papa Kwasi Ndoum has made the revelation through his facebook wall that reads "For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future- Jeremiah 29:11." He takes solace in the biblical reference and with one can be deduced as an obvious celebration. His message continues "I am extremely happy to report that the Birim Group Lawsuit filed against me and others in the USA alleging money laundering etc has been DISMISSED!!! " Somewhere may 2021, an equity fund and securities investment company based in the United States, Birim Group LLC, brought charges against the founder and former flagbearer of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom.  The plaintoff acussed Dr Ndoum and his subsidiary compa...
